Pathetic : Traders, residents, others express disgust at heaps of dirt in Benin

Traders and other residents of Benin City, Edo State Capital, on Monday strongly condemned the failure of the state government to keep the streets and markets clean through effective refuse clearance and recycling system despite creating extortion rings that routinely demand fees from the people over unrendered services.

A drive around Benin City including Second East Circular Road, New Benin axis, Upper Mission Extension by Aduwawa and other parts of Ugbowo and Third East Circular revealed an eyesore as heaps of packed but uncleared refuse dotted all nooks and crannies of the town, impugning the reputation of the ancient city otherwise renowned for its neat and well laid out aesthetics.

At Second East Circular Road, residents and traders expressed concern over the health dangers of the government’s failure to clear the refuse as stipulated by law, particularly during a raging pandemic.

Indeed, the coronavirus disease was first linked to a dirty wild-life market in Wuhan, China and health experts have warned governments to ensure cleanliness in public places to contain the disease and protect lives.

At the New Benin Area in Benin City, the residents voiced their dissatisfaction over the unhygienic trade of fruits, raw and cooked consumable food items in areas covered by heaps of dirt after government agency responsible for the evacuation of the refuse downed tools after a court judgment barred it from embarking on illegal extortion of people as a routine, state-sanctioned act.

The question on the lips of the people is whether if the government agency responsible for refuse management does not subject residents to extortion, it will not carry out its constitutional duty to the society.
