NLC, FG Meet Tuesday In Rescheduled Meeting Over Fuel Price Hike, Other Issues

The Federal Government on Saturday, September 12, rescheduled the meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); as well as the Trade Union Congress (TUC) till next Tuesday.

iReporter had reported that the meeting was earlier slated to take place on Saturday.

Specifically, the meeting was scheduled for the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Saturday.

Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, who convened the meeting; told journalists on Friday that a government team would meet with the NLC and other civil society groups on the recent hike in the pump price of petrol and electricity tariff.

However, the NLC rejected the invitation to the meeting over the short notice given by the government.

The Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment; Charles Akpan, announced the new date in a text message to journalists on Saturday.

He said: “The meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 15th September at 10:00 a.m. The venue is Banquet Hall of Presidential Villa, Abuja, This is to accommodate all participants.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday, September 11; lamented that the country was fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state.

Obasanjo made this disclosure at a consultative dialogue attended by members of Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum; Northern Elders Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and Pan Niger Delta Forum.

Specifically, the former president blamed the situation on the recent mismanagement of diversity; as well as the socio-economic development of the country.
In his speech at the event entitled ‘Moving Nigeria away from tipping over’, Obasanjo said:

“Today, Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state; economically our country is becoming a basket case and poverty capital of the world, and socially, we are firming up as an unwholesome and insecure country.

“And these manifestations are the products of recent mismanagement of diversity and socio-economic development of our country.

“Old fault lines that were disappearing have opened up in greater fissures and with drums of hatred, disintegration and separation and accompanying choruses being heard loud and clear almost everywhere.”
