Cavani Joins Manchester United

Uruguyan forward Edinson Cavani is close to completing a move to Premier League giants, Manchester United.

The UK Guardian reports that Cavani is expected to travel to England today to complete the move to United.

Cavani is a free agent after his contract with French side Paris Saint-Germain ran out in June. Therefore, no fee would be needed. However, the deal is said to be costing United nearly $250,000 in weekly wages for the striker. Manchester United is expected to offer Cavani a one-year contract, with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

Meanwhile, reports in England indicate that all is set for the move to be finalized.

‘‘Personal terms were agreed with the player on Saturday. Cavani’s agents are asking for €10m as part of the deal, a figure that led to potential moves to Benfica and Atlético Madrid collapsing earlier in the summer, but United have indicated they are willing to do business,’’ the Guardian stated.

United’s move for the lethal forward came after Cavani was offered to the side and other clubs. His potential availability made him a serious target for Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman. This was in view of the fact that United were hardly making headway with their preferred target. Borussia Dortmund were unwilling to lower their €120 valuation of Jadon Sancho. Also, a move for Barcelona winger, Ousmane Dembélé was also not yielding much fruit.

Cavani starred for PSG for seven seasons after joining from Serie A side, Napoli. The striker is PSG’s record goalscorer with 200 goals. He also won a number of trophies with the French side including six Ligue 1 titles.

The Uruguayan legend also has 50 goals in 116 appearances for his country.

Manchester United have only completed one signing so far; with Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek arriving from Ajax.
